Genre cloud in the shape of a guitar

DiscoCat 1.1

The first significant update to DiscoCat is out today, DiscoCat 1.1. Here are some of the enhancements.

Improved Onboarding Experience

  • Genre search
  • Artist search
  • Better artist relevance for given genres
  • A new streaming provider setup screen
  • Other UX improvements

Saved Item Search

Saved (bookmarked or rated) item search for:

  • Saved Artists (by name)
  • Saved Releases (by title)
  • Saved Release Versions (by title)
  • Saved Tracks (by title)
  • Saved Recordings (by title)
  • Saved Works (by title)
  • Saved Record Labels (by name)

Discover Screen

To avoid confusion with the new saved item search, the existing external catalog search and Shazam tab/screen (formerly called Search) has been renamed to Discover and the tab icon has been updated as well.

Better Genre/Tag Artists Relevance

This was mentioned above for genres during onboarding but it also applies in other parts of the app as well, anywhere where genres or tags are used to find artists. For example, the suggested artist mix is more relevant now and so are the artists you get when you tap on a genre or tag from the artist detail screen.

The artist relevance improvement is mostly due to the the app now disregarding artists that have genres or tags with less than 2 votes on MusicBrainz, unless that is the only genre or tag in the list for that particular artist. Besides the artist relevance improvements, the app also returns about twice as many artists for a given genre or tag than it did before.
